Measuring Data
New applications and ways of working mean the radio bearer network must support both voice and data communications. For voice, the accepted measure is voice quality. For data, different quality of service (QoS) metrics are necessary. Such as Bit and Message Error Rates (BER, MER), data set-up delay, latency, jitter and throughput.
Data throughput
Our data test and measurement service measures true end-to-end service and can reveal the quality and performance of your mobile data applications by measuring:
- Data & message throughput
- IP packet, Status & SDS/SMS delay
- Data call set-up delay
Syntech use test scripts to automate and repeat the test sequence. Standard scripts measure the QoS of the generic data mechanisms such as IP data or SDS throughput. Running bespoke scripts with the data application itself mimics true end-to-end performance. Tests can be repeated across a range of different scenarios and traffic profiles.
Bearer Independent
Being an end-to-end measure means that the techniques used are bearer independent and can encompass:
- PMR; Tetra, ACPO-25, MPT1327
- Public: GSM, GPRS, UMTS

Syntech’s approach to measuring data is similar to that used for voice whereby we - Select the most suitable test equipment
- Derive test scripts and scenarios to load the network
- Analyse the collected data
- Supply a comprehensive report of results
